When it comes to international trade, an original bill of lading is one of the most important documents for shippers and consignees. Issued by a carrier, it specifies consignment title and is used to guarantee receipt of goods for importers and payment for exporters. Sometimes abbreviated as B-L or BoL, a bill of lading is a legal document that additionally catalogues contract terms and conditions for the sale and purchase of merchandise.

What happens if original bill of lading lost?
If an importer lost BL, just check with shipper how many negotiable and non-negotiable BL shipper or exporter has with him, they may have additional. You can ask them to send it to you if extra is available. But if shipment is already reached destination you may have to pay demurrage or detention charges while keeping goods at destination port warehouse. Shipper can request Shipping line-Forwarder to re-issue BL or in case of urgency he may ask shipping line- forwarder to surrender it with Imporeter at destination, which I think is possiblle with certain formalities.

In the previous two editions, we have talked about situations where there has been a request to change bills of lading. Now we turn to the third and final one: where a negotiable bill of lading is said to have been lost before the shipment is ready for delivery.
