Experience Art

The Messenger, 1996, a recent video projection by Bill Viola, was one of the museum’s major acquisitions of 1996. To describe this work as the simple interaction of a man in water belies its austere beauty and startling power. In it, the artist has maintained his signature ambiguity with imagery that can transcend the physical world and encourage a spiritual interpretation.

The Messenger envelops its viewers in an entrancing underwater world of image and sound that has been described as ‘eye-opening’ and ‘life-affirming’. This is the first time a major work by Bill Viola has been exhibited in New Zealand.

Bill Viola The Messenger, 1996

Bill Viola is credited with bringing his childhood-inspired elemental wonder to the masses through a vast canon of stunning visual work. That leaves the visual arts pioneer open to criticism from some quarters, writes Mike Ladd.

In Pursuit of the Periphery by Alice Clanachan

Art is normally the self-effacing cousin of film (and theatre, or dance), but The Messenger asks for more sustained attention than a buttery painting or a dimly-lit print. Time is deliberately slowed and stretched. The work creates a quiet, reflective space, and a bench encourages you to sit.

For the artist water is a mystic transformer. When he was a young child of 6 years he almost drowned in a lake. He described once this experience not as frightening and negative, but rather as gorgeous and sublime. This experience and the search for recovery of  this sublime state has significant influence on his work.
