RIDGID JobMax Review

There are five different heads you can get with the JobMax system – the Oscillating tool head that comes standard in the bundle, an Auto Hammer, a 3-8″ Right Angle Drill, a 3-8″ Square drive Ratchet, and a Right Angle Impact Driver.  I tested each tool against a comparable standard tool just to see how well each performed, and I’ll admit I was pleasantly surprised.  Each of the different tool heads met (or exceeded) any expectations I had for it.

OK, so that’s 6 tools in one. Not bad for a platform that’s fairly new and only just getting started. We have it on good word that the JobMax line is just getting started, and we’re hoping for some additional heads in the near future (maybe they could come out with something like a one-handed reciprocating saw or a rotary tool?)

My only beefs with this tool are with the oscillating head and not the pneumatic drive. I think this tool could benefit from a tool-less accessory change. Ridgid at least put a hefty bolt in place that doesn’t vibrate loose. Also maybe a few more accessory blades. A scraper blade would be useful. It comes with a universal adapter so I can at least use other brand blades.

Oscillating tools are great for a few specific jobs like removing grout, making drywall cutouts and undercutting trim for flooring installation. But mostly, an oscillating multi tool is a problem solver for a thousand weird situations. As one remodeler told us, “I couldn’t list the last ten things I used it for, but I know I couldn’t live without it.” Several Field Editors told us something similar: “I couldn’t imagine any need for an oscillating multi tool—until I got one.”

Policies & Plans

I’ve got all kinds of drill-drivers in the workshop so having a right angle drill-driver in the 12 volt platform is pretty cool. The drill-driver had no problem sinking long screws and drilling holes with regular drill bits and spade bits. While the right angle-drill driver is convenient I do have one issue with this and the impact driver below. The location of the trigger is really far from the head which makes the balance a bit strange. Most cordless right angle drill-drivers on the market have the trigger up closer to the head which makes one handed use much easier.

Dislikes: The model we tested did not have tool-free accessory mounting, unlike the Fein. A new version, the MX30E ($200), corrects that deficiency; our advice is to choose that one.
