The timing belt – Risks and side effects

Not at all! The timing belt forms one of the most important connections of all: the one between the camshaft and crankshaft. The fact is that the engine wouldn’t run at all without it. Using the timing belt, the crankshaft drives the camshaft, which in turn actuates the inlet and outlet valves. In order to fill and empty the combustion chambers to optimum effect, this needs to occur at a specific point in time and for a very specific duration. In diesel engines, it’s usually the injection pump that puts the most strain on the belt.

Since the timing cover must surround the entire timing chain, which runs from the engine crank up to the camshafts, it’s a large cover with a large gasket.  Also, as you drive, the timing chain whips oil from down on the crank all the way up to the top of your engine so a leak could appear anywhere from the bottom to the top of your engine making them difficult to diagnose.

Timing belts are available in two sizes: in metric (millimetres) and imperial (inches) dimensions. The profile of the inner teeth of the belt which goes over the outer teeth of the pulley is the second most important factor. The most common forms are the trapezoidal and round tooth shape. What makes it complex are the different types of tooth shapes. Therefore, we are going to discuss the variety of different tooth types available and to help you one step further, we also provide a number of common applications in each case.

Reminder: marking the old belt with paint where it meets the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys, and transfering these marks to the new belt, will make it much easier to install the belt if any of the pulleys happen to move between the removal of the old belt and the installation of the new one.

Synchronous belts began to appear in car engines in the 1960s. At that time they were used in several branches of the industry for the manufacture of vehicles allowing transmission of power or synchronous commands. Running alongside the development of the automobile, the timing belt began to make its mark as a central element in the operation of both petrol and diesel engines.

I have small amount of oil leaking from the cover of the timing belt. If the Avalon has a timing chain, what could the oil to leak down?

Took the 2006 Toyota Avalon to a dealership to find what is leaking oil from the timing case cover. They said the problem was the timing belt needs to replaced. The Avalon has a chain, so can they be talking about seals that need to be replaced?  Or am I being taken for a ride?
